Love and Soul

‘의심이 자리잡은 마음에는 사랑이 깃들지 못한다.’ vs ‘사랑은 모든 것을 이긴다.’

‘에로스와 프시케’. 사랑을 상징하는 ‘에로스 (Eros) ’와 영혼의 의미를 가지고 있는 ‘프시케 (Psyche) ’. 즉 , ‘사랑과 영혼’은 큐피트가 프시케를 보고 자신에게 스스로 찌른 사랑의 화살로 인해 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 신화 속 이야기에 의하면 에로스는 끊임없이 사랑을 주고, 프시케는 지나친 호기심으로 에로스와의 사랑에 의심을 자리하게한다.

결국 프시케는 자신이 저지른 실수로 인해 에로스를 떠나게한다. 그러나 프시케는 에로스를 포기할 수 없었고 에로스의 어머니인 비너스를 찾아가 사정하며 용서를 빌고 비너스가 내린 여러 단계의 시험을 치르게 된다.

저승까지 가면서 마지막 단계까지 잘 견뎌왔던 프시케. 그러나 그녀는 스스로의 지나친 호기심으로 인해 열어서는 안되는 상자를 열어  영원히 잠들 위기에 처한다. 프시케의 호기심과 배신으로 화가 많이 나있던 에로스는 상처난 몸과 마음을 추스르고 나니 또 다시 프시케가 그리워졌고, 영원의 잠에 들 위기에 처한 프시케를 찾고 호기심으로 또 위기에 처한 그녀를 받아들이고 결국은 사랑으로 치유해 깨어나게한다.

프시케는 끊임앖이 의심하고, 실망시키는 일의 연속이었다. 그러한 그녀에게 에로스는 결국 백기투항하듯 사랑으로 모든 것을 감싸주었다. 물론 에로스를 향한 프시케의 사랑이 적었거나 그녀의 실수들이 사랑에 위배되는 행동이라 단정지을 수 없다. 그러나 에로스의 입장에서 모든 프시케의 행동들이 사랑하는 이에게 있어 힘든 시련이었을 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 에로스는 프시케를 사랑으로 감싸안았고 프시케 또한 자신의 실수를 만회하기위해 무서운 시어머니인 비너스의 모든 요구를 따랐다.

나는 이 작품으로인해 지정한 사랑의 의미와 위대함을 다시금 깨닫기를 바란다.

작업을 하는 내내 그리고, 하고 난 지금도 여전히 나는 누군가를 사랑으로 감싼다는 그 의미가 너무나 어려운 것임을 알고있다. 사랑이 그만큼 위대하고, 어려운 것이나 또 동시에 가장 강력하고 아름다운 감정이라는 것 역시 더 깊게 새겨졌다. 내가 말하는 사랑이란 비단 남녀의 사랑만을 말하는 것이 아니라 인류안에 모든 종류의 사랑을 의미한다. ‘의심이 자리잡은 마음에는 사랑이 깃들지 못한다’ 라 말하고 프시케를 사랑으로 용서한 에로스이다. 용서는 너무 어려운 감정 중 하나이다. 누군가에게 베풀어야하는 마음이고, 이것은 마치 내 것을 떼어주는 심정일 것이다.

그런 이 힘든 일을 우리는 사랑 그 하나로 이겨낸다. 사랑 안에는 질투, 의심, 베품, 긍휼 등 여러 감정의 복합체이며 모든 것을 감싸는 인간이 느낄 수 있는 가장 아름다운 감정이다. 사랑하는 감정은 긍휼한 마음과 안쓰러움의 마음이 크게 자리하는 것 같다. 그 어려운 감정들이 모여 가장 아름다운 사랑이라는 감정이 형성되는 것 같다.

이 시대에는 너무나 잘못된 사랑의 언어들이 난무하고, 자신의 감정만을 앞세우는 이기적인 마음들이 가득하다.

사랑은 자기 것을 내어주는 것이지 자신의 것을 강요하는 것이 아니다.

요즈음 뉴스나 SNS에 심심찮게 등장하는 데이트 폭력, 부모 자식간의 살해, 이웃 폭행과 같은 사건을 마주하면 이 시대에는 사랑의 감정이 잘못 퇴색되었거나 진정한 사랑의 의미, 영혼을 담은 절실함과 진정성이 없다는 생각이 들곤한다. 모두가 여유가 없고 늘 화로 가득차 있다. 나 역시 그렇게 변해가는 나 자신을 발견하고 마음이 아팠던 기억이 있어 더욱 이러한 이야기를 접하거나 작업함으로 진정한 사랑을 다시 깨우고 그것을 나누고 싶어졌다.

누군가를 사랑하는 것은 너무나 소중한 감정이다.

이 소중함을 소중한 이들과 나누었으면 좋겠다.

의심도 이겨낸 에로스의 사랑과 저승의 두려움도 견뎌낸 프시케의 진정성을 본받고 그들과 같은 아름다운 사랑을 하기를 간절히 바라본다.

Love and Soul 

‘Love cannot exist if there’s doubt in mind’ vs ‘Love wins everything’

‘Eros and Psyche’. Eros symbolizes love and Psyche has meaning of soul. By using their characteristics, I had designed installation named as ‘love and soul’ with the story of Eros accidently stabbing himself with his arrow since he got fall in love to Psyche as soon as he found her.

Since the story from well-known legend, most of the people would be similar. The story that I contains is that Eros kept gave love while Psyche doubt about Eros’s love due to having too much curiosity. Considering this idea, Psyche made Eros to leave herself due to its own fault. Yet, Psyche couldn’t give up Eros so that Psyche went to Venus whom is mother of Eros, asking for forgiveness and even took several tests that Venus gave it to Psyche.

Fortunately, Psyche had done well with the tests. Nevertheless, she still had curiosity over Eros which made her to open the box that she shouldn’t. This is because as you may all know the elements inside box let Psyche to fell in sleep forever. Yet, Eros still had much love towards her to uses his love for curing and waking up Psyche even though he was upset about her curiosity and betray.

Psyche kept made curiosity about things so that disappoints Eros a lot. However, Eros covers everything through his love towards Psyche. Of course, we cannot say that Psyche didn’t love Eros nor her mistake violates their love. Rather, acts of the Psyche might have given hard time to Eros. Still, not only Eros covered the entire Psyche’s mistake with love but also Psyche received all the Venus’s demand in order to make up for her mistake.

I want people to realize the real meaning and greatness of love. I know that it’s very difficult to cover up someone with love even when I was making this artwork. Also, I understood that love has its greatness but difficult to do at the same time. Yet, I realized that love has the power and beautifulness. The meaning of the love that I want to define is not just a love between women and men, it’s rather meaning of all the kinds of the love that exists in human life.

Eros forgives Psyche by saying that ‘love cannot place in the mind if there is curiosity’. With his word, we can understand that forgiving someone is difficult thing. It’s a feeling that has to give kindness to someone and might even have to sacrifice itself. Nevertheless, we overcome obstacles with our love. In love, there are various feelings such as curiosity, jealous, giving, pity and more. On the other hand, love is the most beautiful feeling that human can have. Emotion of love contains both love and sympathy. These various and difficult feelings comes together and makes one emotion of love.

In recent days, people use mistaken words while loving others and only put off its love that can be very selfish. I believe that love is giving something, not forcing the other. Nowadays, we can see issues about date violence, murder between the parents and child and even fight with the neighborhood. If we watch or hear these kinds of the issues through media, it seems like the meaning of the love had faded or the meaning of the love and desperate mind of the love might have no true feeling. Everyone is busy and usually has full of anger in their mind. I personally even had the same feeling and had hard time because of anger so that I’d like to re-notice about real meaning of the love and share it with others.

The feeling of loving the other is much precious.

I want people to share this precious mind with its own loving people.

I hope you can do a real love like Eros who overcame curiosity and Psyche who overcame the fear of love and hell.
