벌거벗은     몸으로     말을     타고     있는     여인은     영국     코벤트리의     영주의     부인    <고디바>다.

11 세기  초,  데미안의     왕     크투츠 1 세가     (바이킹의     일파)     영국을     점령한다.     그     후     많은     영국의     자유농민들의     사회적 위치가     농노의     신분으로     격하되었고,     새로운     왕의     가혹한     세금징수를     참아야만     했다.     코벤트리의     영주 레오프릭     또한     농민들을     잔혹하게     다루었으며     강압적으로     세금을     징발했다.

 참혹한     농민들의     생활을     보다     못한     레오프릭의     부인     고디바는     남편에게     세금감면을     간청하지만     냉혹히 거절당한다.     고디바     부인은     독실한     기독교     신자였는데,     “언젠가는     하나님이     영주의     마음을     감동시켜 농민들의     어려움을     돌아     볼     것”이라는     믿음을     버리지     않고     포기하지     않았다.     끝없는     고디바의     간청     끝에, 영주는     절대     이루어     질     수     없는     조건     하나를     제시하는데,     바로     그     조건이     “알몸으로     말을     타고     도시를 돌며     농부들의     대한     사랑을     보여달라”는     허무맹랑한     요구였다.

 영주는     고디바의     알몸     시위가     불가능할     것이라     판단했던     것이다.     그러나     자신의     수치보다     농민들의  아픔을     더욱     더     생각했던     고디바     부인은     정말로     실오라기     하나     걸치지     않고     저녁에     말을     타고     시내를  돌기     시작한다.     고디바의     이런     행동은     모든     도시     사람들에게     전해졌다.     영주는     이런     소식에     잠시  당혹했지만,     이제     많은     사람들이     그녀를     보러     몰려들     것이고,     수치를     참다     못해     고디바는     다시     옷을 입고     성으로     돌아올     것이라     생각을     했다.

 그러나     영주는     바로     자기의     예상이     마치     운명이     자기를     조롱하듯     빗나간     것을     알게     된다.     코벤트리의

 시민들은     고디바     부인에     대해     존경심을     갖기     시작했으며.     그런     존경심을     표하기     위해     시민들은     고디바 부인의     시위가     끝나기     까지     커튼을     치고     밖으로     나오지     않았다고     한다.     이로     인해     농부들은     세금감면을 받게     되었다.

순결한    희생,    순수한    시선..    이러한    것이    오늘    날    과연    존재할까?

레이디    고디바.    그녀는    남    부러울    것    없는    여인이었다.

나체로    마을을    돌며    남편을    회유할    필요도    굳이    없었다.    이    모든    행동은    그녀의    아름다운    성심과    옛    조상들의    ‘노블리스    오블리주    ‘    정신이    어떠한    것이었는지    보여주는    예다.

이러한    고디바    부인의    희생처럼,    용기    있고,    순수한.    다른    뜻이    숨어    있지    않은    아름다운    희생을    감행할    자가    현대에도    있을까?

오늘    날,    우리는    많은    것들이    빠르게    변화하는    시대에    살고    있다.    그래서    일까?

슬픔도,    분노도    너무    빠르게    움직인다.    한    사람,    한    사람이    어느    정도    목소리를    낼    수 있게    되었고,    또한,    이    목소리는    누군가의    평가를    너무나    신랄하게    받는다.

    누군가의    희생도    곧    이슈화가    되고,    또    그    이슈는    너무나    뜨겁게    비판과    판단을    받는다.    그리고    그    희생도    가끔은    보여주기    식의    퍼포먼스가    숨겨져    있다.    마치    바보연극의 주인공처럼..

이러한    현상은    마녀사냥(Chasse    aux    sorceries’)과    퇴색된    노블리스    오블리주의    혼선이란    생각이    들었다.

그    어디에도..    순수한    마음이    없는    듯    보인다.

    고디바    부인의    전래에    의하면    마을    사람들은    자신들을    위해    희생하는    영주    부인의    고귀한    마음을    생각하며,    집의    창문을    걸어    잠그고    커튼을    친    다음    밖을    내다보지    않았다.    그런데    딱    한    사람,    양복점    직원인    톰이라는    재단사가    젊은    영주    부인이    알몸으로 말을    타고    가는    모습을    커튼    사이로    몰래    엿보았는데,    하늘이    노했는지    나중에    장님이 되고    말았다는    설이    있다.

    오늘    날에는,    음흉한    마음으로    숨어서    나체를    훔쳐    보아    장님이    된    그    자가    더    많아진듯    하다.

그럼에도    불구하고,    분명    고디바    마을의    사람들처럼    순수하고    따뜻한    마음들이    지금도 존재한다.

하지만    그들의    밝은    빛이    도리어    훔쳐보던    음흉한    한    사람에게    가려지는    현실이다.

 최근    우리나라서도,    나라에    슬픔이    한    가득    인데,    오히려    이    틈에    온갖    더럽고    음흉한 행동으로    자신의    이득만을    취하려는    자들이    들끓고,    배려라는    것은    찾아보기    힘들었다.

    어찌    그럴까..

나는    고디바    부인의    희생과    그    정신을    다시금    깨닫길    바라는    마음에서    작업하게    되었다.    어쩌면    코벤트리    마을의    백성들은    고디바    부인의    정성에    마음이    누그러진    것은    아닐까?

나는    그    누구도    비판하고    싶지    않다.    그    누구도    비판을    쉽게    할    자격은    없다고    생각한다.    모두가    각자의    입장이    있으리라..    다만,    우리가    잊고    있었던    고귀한    마음과    정신을 깨닫는다면    앞으로    있을    위기와    고난을    극복하고,    우리    후세에게    좋은    본보기가    되지 않을까 싶다.    고디바    부인이    그렇게    했던    것처럼..

우리가    지금    존재하는    이    시간,    이    곳에서    조금    더    따뜻한    마음과    여유가    있기를    간절히    바래본다.

The naked young woman riding the horse is Lady Godiva, the wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia.

In the early 11^th century, King Ctuz I (Norse seafarer) conquers England. Afterwards, many peasants and yeomanry were demoted to serfs, and were taxed heavily by the new king. Earl Leofric of Coventry also was cruel towards his rulings and tortured his subjects with high taxation.

Feeling sorry for the people of Coventry who were suffering under his husband’s harsh tax rates, she appeals to her husband’s heart but is rejected. Lady Godiva was a devout Christian who believed that the Earl will one day be touched the grace of the Lord, and will listen to the voices of the people who are struggling.” She kept her faith and didn’t give up on her cause. After relentless pleas by Lady Godiva, Leofric finally gives in, but provides her with a condition stating that she must ride around the town naked to express her love for the farmers.

The Earl believed that such request would be enough for Lady Godiva give up on her cause. However, believing in the greater good than herself, she undressed herself and began riding around town without a single cloth on her. The word that Lady Godiva was riding naked around town soon spread around, and the Earl expected his Lady give up and return back to the castle in shame.
The Earl was wrong. Moved by her kindness and devotion, the citizens of Coventry did not come out of their house until Lady Godiva finished going around town. They even shut all their curtains down out of respect. Due to her selflessness, the Earl eventually gave up trying to tax the citizens of Coventry.

 

Lady Godiva was a woman who had everything. Her attitude towards helping others well display the noblesse oblige mentality that people had in earlier times. Would such a person exist in today’s world who would sacrifice herself out of pure courage and bravery? We live in a fast, urban, modern world where we are struggling to adapt to rapid changes around us.

Sadness and anger moves around too fast. Someone’s sacrifice becomes an agenda, an issue, and becomes criticized by the public. There is a widespread belief we perform our sacrifice, to put on a show with a mask. We live in Chasse aux sorceries’ with a faded sense of noblesse oblige. Sincerity is nowhere to be scene.

According to the legend of Lady Godiva, while everyone else remained indoors with their curtains, only one man, now titled Peeping Tom, sneaked a peak at the naked Lady Godiva. The legend tells that Peeping Tom was blinded by God due to his

insolence. Even though there still are a lot of Peeping Toms in this world, good, kind people still exist in our world today.

Even during the recent tragedy in Korea, there are many others, who are trying to take advantage and exploit the people’s grief and sadness, rather than trying to help them. What has happened to the world?
I began working on my project in hopes of re-awakening the magnanimity of Lady Godiva and her sense of self-sacrifice. I do not wish to criticize anyone. No one has the right to easily criticize others. People all have reasons behind their actions. I only hope that we can grow warmer and kinder to one another, helping each other in times of need so that we may become role models for our future generation like Lady Godiva.
