장지연/DAPHNE JIYEON JANG

장지연은 조소 베이스의 미디어 아티스트이다. 대규모 미디어 공간 맵핑, 설치를 하는 장지연은 3D 애니 메이션 및 미디어 파사드, 프로젝션 맵핑, 몰입형 프로젝션 등 다양한 디지털 사이니지(Digital Signage) 를 통해 가상과 현실 사이의 이야기를 그려낸다. 장지연은 계층, 계급 및 배타성, 인간 본연의 감정과 사건 들을 시간 혹은 역사가 담긴 조각이나 이미지를 3D 모델링과 스캐닝 한 데이터로 구현하고, 움직임을 더해 멈춰 있던 오브제에 서사를 반영하는 “움직이는 조각” 으로 현현한다. “움직이는 조각”은 각기 다른 시간대에서 멈춰 있는 시간과 공간의 절대성을 해체시키고, 디지털 세계에서 결합 (Digital Re-unification) 한다. 자체 제작하는 3D 모델링 및 애니메이션, 미디어 파사드, 프로젝션 맵핑을 통해 조각이나 이미지를 3D 데이터로 구현하고 움직임을 더해 멈춰 있던 오브제에 서사를 투영하여, “움직이는 조각”은 각기 다른 시간대에서 멈춰 있는 시간성을 깨우고 공간의 절대성을 없애 마침내 디지털 세계에서 결합(Digital Unification)한다. 또한, 장지연은 “움직이는 조각”을 넘어서 공공프로젝트 에서는 장소가 가진 고유의 히스토리를 담아내고, 장소성을 고려한 스토리를 콘텐츠에 담아내 구상과 비구상 모두 고려한 미디어 파사드로 작업을 확장하며 다양한 플랫폼에서 선보이고 있다.
장지연은 가천대학교(경원대학교)에서 조소과를 졸업하고, Edinburgh College of Art ­ The University of Edinburgh 에서 MFA Contemporary Art Practice 석사 학위를 받았다.
장지연은 Cite internationale des Arts (파리), Waterfall Mansion (뉴욕), AHAF (홍콩), Art & Design Future Lab (상하이), Platform P_ost (네덜란드), Talbot Rice Gallery (에딘버러), 서울시립미술관을 포함하여 아시아, 유럽 및 미국에서 전시되었다. 뿐만 아니라, 가나문화재단의 후원으로 파리국제예술공동체와 영국 맨체스터의 Art Funkl을 포함한 여러 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했다. SONY의 4K 프로젝터 런칭쇼를 비롯해 HyperVSN 하이퍼비젼 한국 총판을 포함한 다수의 기업과 아트앤테크 콜라보레이션 작업을 선보여 왔다. 장지연은 2019년 국제적 명성의 갤러리인 영국의 Talbot Rice Gallery, “Trading Zone” 에서 거대 스케일의 3D 프로젝션을 선보여 영국 내 영 아티스트로 큰 주목을 끌었고, 스코틀랜드 왕립예술원에서 개최한 193회 연례 행사에서 최고의 작품으로 선정한 <RSA KIETH PRIZE> 수상했다. 또한, 뉴미디어 홀로그램 하이퍼비젼 한국 총판의 국내 최대 규모, 최초 후원으로 하이퍼미디어아트 “헐벗은 바벨 – Uncivilizations” 개인전을 옵스큐라 갤러리에서 선보여 Art and Technology 의 새로운 비전을 제시했다. 2022 파라다이스 아트랩에 선정되어 국내 초대형 미디어 파사드 작업을 선보이며 주목을 받았으며, 유네스코 세계문화유산인 수원 화성에서의 미디어 아트쇼로 미디어 파사드를 보이며 공공미술로의 확장을 이어갔다. 작가는 2020 John Kinross Scholarship 을 수상하여 로얄 스코티시 아카데미와 2022 한국문화에술위원회의 지원으로 이탈리아 피렌체에서 연수를 마쳤고, 2023년 서울문화재단이 주관 “UnfoldX”에 선정 작가로 제 2회 서울융합예술페스티벌 <달로 가는 정거장 The Way Station to the Moon>에 참여해 <Uncanny Nature> 신작으로 새로운 융합예술을 선보이며 뜨거운 관심을 받았다. 최근에는 이머시브 아트의 확장을 위해 피아니스트 안종도와 함께 Philip&Daphne 콜렉티브를 결성하고, 프로젝션 맵핑과 입체 음향 기술을 결합한 프로젝트를 진행중이며, 오는 11월 4D SOUNDS 및 MONOM과의 협업을 통해 베를린의 MONOM STUDIO 에서 공연/전시를 앞두고 있다. 장지연의 작품은 Google Art&Culture 에 아카이빙 되었고, 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 정부미술은행을 비롯해 여러 기관에 소장되었다.

Daphne Jiyeon Jang is a visual artist, lecturer, and researcher based in Seoul, South Korea. She specializes in creating large-scale media installations and mappings, utilizing various forms of digital signage such as 3D animation, media facades, projection mapping, and immersive projections to tell stories that bridge the gap between the virtual and the real. Jang works with data derived from 3D modeling and scanning of objects or images that contain layers, hierarchies, exclusivity, and fundamental human emotions and events. She infuses movement into these objects, turning them into "moving sculptures" that reflect narratives onto once- static objects. "Moving sculptures" dismantle the absolutes of time and space, reuniting them in the digital world through a process she calls "Digital Re-unification.” In addition to her "moving sculptures," Jang extends her artistic practice to public projects, capturing the unique history and sense of place of various locations in her content. She creates media facades that consider both the tangible and intangible aspects of space and presents her work on various platforms.
Daphne Jiyeon Jang earned her Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from Gachon University (Kyungwon University) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Contemporary Art Practice from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Asia, Europe, and the United States, including venues such as Cite internationale des Arts (Paris), Waterfall Mansion (New York), AHAF (Hong Kong), Art & Design Future Lab (Shanghai), Platform P_ost (Netherlands), Talbot Rice Gallery (Edinburgh), and Seoul Museum of Art. She has also participated in residency programs sponsored by organizations like the Ghana Cultural Foundation, Paris International Art Collective, and Art Funkl in Manchester, UK.
Jang has collaborated with several companies and organizations, including SONY's 4K projector launch show and Hyper VSN, the distributor of HyperVSN in Korea. In 2019, she gained significant attention as a UK-based artist with her large-scale 3D projection art showcased at Talbot Rice Gallery's "Trading Zone," and she received the "RSA KIETH PRIZE" at the 193rd Annual Exhibition held by the Royal Scottish Academy. Furthermore, she expanded her artistic vision by presenting a solo exhibition titled "헐벗은 바벨 – Uncivilizations" in collaboration with the New Media Hologram HyperVSN Korea Distributor, showcasing one of the largest and first-ever supported hypermedia art exhibitions in Korea. Also, she was selected for the 2022 Paradise Art Lab and gained recognition for her large-scale media facade work. She continued to expand into public art with a media facade presentation at Suwon Hwaseong, the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Furthermore, Jang was awarded the 2020 John Kinross Scholarship and completed a residency in Florence, Italy, supported by the Royal Scottish Academy and the Arts Council Korea (2022). In 2023, she was selected as one of the featured artists for “UnfoldX,” organized by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and participated in the 2nd Seoul Convergence Art Festival with her new work Uncanny Nature, showcased under the theme The Way Station to the Moon, receiving widespread attention for her innovative approach to convergence art.
Most recently, in an effort to expand the realm of immersive art, she co-founded the collective Philip&Daphne with pianist Jongdo An. Together, they are developing a project that merges projection mapping with spatial audio technology. A performance and exhibition of this work is scheduled for November at MONOM Studio in Berlin, in collaboration with 4D SOUND and MONOM. Jang’s works have been archived on Google Arts & Culture, and are part of several institutional collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank and the Government Art Bank.
